HomeWell Cares

Our HomeWell Care Services agencies provide valuable local health care education and community outreach resources to seniors, families, referral partners and their local communities through our HomeWell Cares™ Community Education Initiative. Through this initiative, educational events and program materials are offered on a variety of health, wellness, and safety issues that often afflict our senior population. Our goal is to build awareness to help identify and avoid associated challenges and risks with these public health issues.

Contact your local HomeWell Care Services if you’d like to learn more about our HomeWell Cares initiative or plan an educational event.

Stroke Awareness

Stroke is the fifth cause of death in the United States and can happen to anyone at any time when blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off. Brain cells are then deprived of oxygen and begin to die. Prompt treatment is crucial in minimizing brain damage and potential complications. Know the Symptoms and Think F-A-S-T:

Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Or is one arm unable to rise up?

Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?

Time. If you observe any of these signs, note the time and call 911 immediately.

Senior Isolation and Depression

Senior Isolation is a term used to describe feelings of loneliness and depression along with a lack of socialization found among seniors. Forty-three percent of seniors describe themselves as feeling lonely regularly and of those seniors, 59% have a greater risk of functional decline and a 45% greater risk of death. Since the average adult child now lives 280 miles or more away from their aging parent and with the COVID-19 pandemic adding yet another layer of complexity and considerations, senior isolation and depression is on the rise. At HomeWell, we feel it is important to recognize that senior loneliness, isolation, and depression is more than just a social problem—it’s a serious public health issue.

Heart Health

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. When people talk about heart disease, they are usually talking about Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). It is also called Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). This is the most common type of heart disease.

When someone has CHD, the coronary arteries that take blood to the heart are narrow or blocked. This happens when cholesterol and fatty material, called plaque, build up inside the arteries. When plaque blocks an artery, it’s hard for blood to flow to the heart. A blocked artery can cause chest pain or a heart attack. Join HomeWell Care Services to learn how to identify signs of a heart attack and the steps to take to prevent them.

Fall Prevention

One out of five falls causes serious injury such as broken bones or a head injury. A fall is landing on the ground or a lower surface that was not intended. Every 11 seconds, an older adult is seen in an emergency room for a fall related injury.

Do you or a loved one have a fear of falling? Have you or a loved one experienced a fall within the past three months? Do you or a loved one feel unsteady when walking? If you answered yes to at least one of these questions, then you or your loved one may be a fall risk.
